I paid little atten tion to the campaign, had no knowledge of his background as a conserva tive television journalist, and was unimpressed when he was elected in the Nixon landslide of that November. I began college in North Carolina in September 1972, just about the time Helms’s first Senate campaign was heating up. It was also a place of powerful traditions of regional identity. Growing up in New Jersey to parents who were North Car olinians, I spent summer months in the South during the 1950s and 1960s, and it was, for me, an exotic and fascinating place of hope and despair, fail ure and promise. Less a personal biography than a public one, this book seeks to unwrap the tangled history of the South and the nation, and the rise of the American right, through an examination of a single individual. His study of Jesse Helms grew out of a long-standing interest in southern public life during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
